What is a Healthy HOME
April 4, 2023
With the changes to the National Construction Code 2022 (Condensation Management) coming into effect, "Healthy home" has become a buzz phrase.
It's one that I think is being used quite loosely to describe homes that are built with condensation management and ventilation strategies in place, without fully understanding the many different ways the built environment can impact the wellbeing of the human.
This can be misleading for clients and could land architects, building designers and builders, who make these claims, in trouble.
In this presentation I did for members of the Australian Institute of Architects, I shared what creating a healthy home has come to mean for me, based on my experiences with environmental illness, and studies in Building Biology, specialising in healthy home design and healthy building materials.
In this presentation, I share what:
- the five key elements of a healthy home
- the most critical but overlooked step that needs to happen before
- how to balance the need to reduce carbon emissions while supporting the wellbeing of the human.
Healthy homes are crucial for our physical and mental well-being. By considering the principles of Building Biology and prioritizing human health in the design stage, we can create homes that truly support our health and wellbeing.
